Conversions/Extensions

Conversions

Energy Calculations Limited provides the calculations required for conversions / material change of use.

The U-Value is an important concept in building design. It represents the air-to-air transmittance of an element. This refers to how well an element conducts heat from one side to the other, which makes it the reciprocal of its thermal resistance. Thus, if we calculate the thermal resistance of an element, we can simply invert it to obtain the U-Value.

Maximum U-Values are required when renovating or retaining thermal elements as part of a material change of use or material alteration, altering a house to flats or barn conversion usually requires the calculations.

Extensions

If a proposed extension has more than 25% glazing of the floor area and is not thermally separate from the main building, the extension will require a SAP report.

The calculation requires to show compliance to L1B for the extension and also requires to show that the CO2 emissions for the dwelling and the over glazed extension is no greater than the dwelling with a notional extension built to the standards required In the Approved Document.
